A Grande Guerra
Original title: La grande guerra
1959
Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1959, this film deserves more attention from movie lovers all around the world. Some critics regard "The Great War" as Monicelli's finest work - and they might be right. Set in Northern Italy during World War I, of course the film is definitely antiwar. As Monicelli once said in an interview : "I wanted to show things as they were -- as usual, badly conducted and led, and no one wanting to fight, or knowing what they were fighting for." It is history from the point of view of the humble people, with a good deal of irony. Starting as a light comedy, "The Great War" ends on a very poignant note, while it doesn't hide any of the horrors of trench warfare.
To me, Mario Monicelli and Dino Risi were the masters of Italian (tragi)comedy back in the 50s and 60s. Their best films (like this one) offer a combination of levity, social criticism and black comedy which is extremely appealing and unique. That said, Monicelli and Risi would never have done such great films without great actors. Here, Gassman and Sordi are a wonderful pair as two army mates caught in a conflict they don't really care about. The film also features beauty queen Silvana Mangano in a small but important part as Gassman's love interest.
A classic, unmissable.

This is real good comedy!
Two of the greatest actors of all time, Alberto Sordi and Vittorio De Sica, performing two exceptional roles. All the other actors, Marisa Merlini, Mara Berni, Nando Bruno, Riccardo Garrone, Lia Zoppelli, Franco Di Trocchio, Carlo Pisacane, etc., they show their talent in this excellent moral comedy. A young and beautiful Sylva Koscina also participates in this exceptional achievement of the great Luigi Zampa, who has given us many other masterpieces. Anytime, to be watched with lots of pleasure.

Comedy on the disasterous Italian national health/medical system !
Story of an ambitious young medical school graduate who through not always ethical means makes a rapid career. Even though its not the best of Alberto Sordi's tragicomical films, this film tells the public about all the inefficiencies and absurdies of the national sanitary system, almost to become a documentary ,but retaining always that 'commedia all'Italiana' satire on Italian society ! The film was so pungent in its critism of the amorality of the Italian medical category, that the Italian Medical Association condemned the film , even though many doctors in private admitted to Alberto Sordi that his film basically depicted well the situation. Now the system of 'mutue' has been abolished in Italy, so the film is only relevant as social criticism for Italy of the early 1970's, but always interesting to watch, and additionally you can have a few laugh's

One of the best Italian comedies.
This marvellous film is an authentic masterpiece, perhaps among the best products of the Italian cinema. The confrontation of two different human kinds, the enterprising editor Fausto Di Salvio (Alberto Sordi) and his shabby book-keeper Ubaldo Palmarini, interpreted by an extraordinary Bernard Blier, is the main source of an intelligent and never ending comicality. The two protagonists reach Africa in search for Mr. Di Salvio's brother-in-law, Oreste Sabatini (Nino Manfredi), who disappeared in the Black Continent without giving news of himself anymore. The trip, full of unbelievable adventures, becomes also for the watcher the occasion to taste the beauty of an uncorrupted nature and to distinguish the true values of life from the silly and stressing habits of modern society. An elegant soundtrack signed by Armando Trovajoli is the perfect musical comment for this movie, skilfully directed by Ettore Scola, which confirms again his limpid talent of master of the Italian comedy.
Il presidente del Borgorosso Football Club
1970
Hilarious comedy about the world of football fans. Alberto Sordi is known in Italy, not only for his many comical and dramatic film roles, but also for playing parts that reflected the new realities of Italian society. In 1970 the football industry was nothing new, but a comedy film about it definitely was. Alberto Sordi plays Benito Fornaciari, a pale, devoutly Catholic, Upper Middleclass Italian who inherits a minor-league football club from a long-lost uncle. He decides to visit the club to sell it, but the local population has other ideas: through an almost-armed uprising they "force" him not to sell the club but lead it to other glories on the football field. Gradually his initial reservations about football erode away to be replaced by an almost fanatical devotion to "his" football club, to the point that he abandons his family, friends, and hometown. He also becomes involved with other pleasures of life, like loving the beautiful female cook ,eating his heart out from the local culinary pleasures, and--best of all--hanging out with the football players during their training retreats.

nice, sad, predictable. gray, salted, seductive. a great cast. an ordinary story. crumbs from Visit of Old lady. and scene for extraordinary performance. a film about laws of poverty and people as toys. about power, cruelty and different worlds. about a game as root of so many feelings, emotions, hopes. and about the cold death of dreams. it can be a parable. or slice from reality. in fact, it is itself. a picture of a place. few characters. Bette Davis , Silvana Mangano , Joseph Cotten and irresistible Alberto Sordi around a table, playing cards. so, a meeting. a rite. shadow of life ashes. and strange image about your world. because it can be, in many senses, a manifesto. not about sins or fall, but about borders of gestures. cold, nice, seductive, bitter. a source of reflection. and testimony about a way without end.
