Google confirmed on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that has designed mobile research robots for the Pentagon. The company, based in Waltham, Mass., has gained an international reputation for machines that walk with an uncanny sense of balance and even — cheetahlike — run faster than the fastest humans.

It is the eighth robotics company that Google has acquired in the last half-year. Executives at the Internet giant are circumspect about what exactly they plan to do with their robot collection. But Boston Dynamics and its animal kingdom-themed machines bring significant cachet to Google’s robotic efforts, which are being led by Andy Rubin, the Google executive who spearheaded the development of Android, the world’s most widely used smartphone software.

The deal is also the clearest indication yet that Google is intent on building a new class of autonomous systems that might do anything from warehouse work to package delivery and even elder care.

Boston Dynamics was founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert, a former professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It has not sold robots commercially, but has pushed the limits of mobile and off-road robotics technology, mostly for Pentagon clients like the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa. Early on, the company also did consulting work for Sony on consumer robots like the Aibo robotic dog.

Boston Dynamics’ walking robots have a reputation for being extraordinarily agile, able to walk over rough terrain and handle surfaces that in some cases are challenging even for humans.

O novo relógio mais complicado do mundo

A Vacheron Constantin festejou ontem 260 anos de história ininterrupta, revelando "o maior feito relojoeiro do século XXI" como refere sem falsas modéstias. Na verdade 57 complicações concentradas num único relógio são um feito único.

A referência 57260, nome técnico do relógio, entra directamente para os anais das obras-primas da relojoaria de todos os tempos. No número, o 57 refere-se precisamente às complicações e o 260 aos anos da casa, que continua exactamente no mesmo sítio onde foi fundada, em Genebra, corria o ano de 1755 por Jean-Marc Vacheron. A título de curiosidade, dentro da marca, o nome de código que era inicialmente utilizado para este relógio era "Tivoli".

São 57 complicações num único calibre, algo nunca visto e que surgem em formato de relógio de bolso de dupla face, como teria de ser para conseguirem apresentar todas estas funções com alguma legibilidade. Seria tarefa impossível descrever de uma forma minimamente perceptível todas estas complicações aqui mas não podemos deixar de destacar o facto de ter não um mas dois calendários perpétuos. Um Gregoriano (o nosso) com indicações de acordo com a norma ISO 8601 (ainda por cima) e um calendário perpétuo hebraico com ciclo de 19 anos e indicador do Número de Ouro nesse ciclo. O relógio é naturalmente uma peça única, feita por encomenda para alguém que deseja manter o anonimato - como é normal neste tipo de objectos especiais.

O novo relógio da Vacheron Constantin é sobretudo um testemunho das capacidades técnicas da manufactura, tendo demorado mais de oito anos a ser construído por três mestres relojoeiros da casa. Desde 1819 que o mote da marca é, "Fazer melhor, se for possível, e isso sempre é possível." Aqui provaram-no claramente.

The Oxford Martin Programme on Technology and Employment is a new

Real-world Intercontinental Quantum Communications Enabled by the Micius Satellite

Abstract:
A joint China-Austria team has performed quantum key distribution between the quantum-science satellite Micius and multiple ground stations located in Xinglong (near Beijing), Nanshan (near Urumqi), and Graz (near Vienna). Such experiments demonstrate the secure satellite-to-ground exchange of cryptographic keys with ∼kHz rate during the passage of the satellite Micius over a ground station. Using Micius as a trusted relay, a secret key is created between China and Europe at locations separated up to 7600 km on the Earth. These keys are then used for intercontinental quantum-secured real-world communication, such as the transmission of images through a one-time-pad technique between China and Austria, and of a video conference with the Advanced-Encryption-Standard (AES)-128 protocol that refreshed the 128-bit seed keys every second. This work will be published in Physical Review Letters on January 19th.

This will put the NSA back to the stone age where they belong. The Chinese satellite Micius has sent a quantum-encrypted dataset between China and Austria. The Chinese are leading the way to what may prove to be a global quantum internet. They launched Micius in August 2016, to experiment with quantum communications and encryption. Conventional communications satellites transmit information via radio or microwave signals. Micius uses quantum-entangled photons to effectively “teleport” information. This means SPEED that is almost instantaneous while quantum communications are extremely secure and will beat everything – yes even blockchain.
